Female alcoholics consuming ‘akpeteshie’ above recommended limits in Volta Region – Study

The findings of a recent study conducted in the Volta Region of Ghana have revealed a disturbing trend among female alcoholics. The study, which surveyed over 500 women who consume the local beverage 'akpeteshie,' found that a majority of them are consuming the drink above recommended limits.

'Akpeteshie,' a popular locally brewed spirit, is known for its high alcohol content, with some variations reaching up to 70% proof. While it is a cultural staple in the region, the excessive consumption of the drink can have serious health implications, including liver damage and addiction.

The study found that over 70% of the women surveyed consume 'akpeteshie' more than three times a week, with over half of them drinking over four glasses in a single session. These levels of consumption far exceed the recommended limit of two glasses a day.

According to the researchers, this trend could be attributed to the socioeconomic status of the women, with poverty and lack of education contributing to the problem. The high levels of alcoholism among women could also have negative effects on their families and communities.

To combat this issue, the researchers have recommended increased education on the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption and interventions to provide support for women struggling with addiction.

The findings of this study serve as a warning and a call to action for the communities of the Volta Region to take action to address the issue of female alcoholism. The lives and health of these women and their families depend on it.
